smoke from washing machine

I know that the comments will be to get a technician to have a look at my machine but I would first like to know what is making my top loading washing machine smoke.
It seems to run fine through all the cycles until it gets to spin, where although it does run the cycle it smokes like crazy, that is when I turn it off.
Any comments will be gladly received.

It could be a whole host of things, also depends on design of your m/c this is a uk based website so you may have a different design than we do (your post idicates you are in New Zealand)

without seeing it we have no idea, i would guess the clutch (if yours has one, new clutch / motor assembly does smell but smoke! NO
