infrastructure projects are essential to keep the country moving
the money he is trying to save is now not in years to come when the hs2 funds need to be found

The country is moving it is just they want these trains to be faster...imho the HS2 is a waste of money and the money could be spent elsewhere

He could save £billions, simply by axing the "foreign aid" budget. Strange that in the EU we are the only country to increase foreign aid in these times of austerity. The vast majority of this foreign aid, goes to countries that have nuclear weapons programs and space programs. Bloody stupid.

that is of course another debate
but in practice will be a perhaps 10% a year over the life off the project so quite a small amount over each year

He could of course get back anything between £40bn and £120bn annually (depending on whether you believe government or independant figures) from tax evasion/avoidance....

Of course that would severely hamper the tory strategy of dismantling/privatising every public organisation in this country...

And why tax the rich when you cut benefits and justice at will in the name of 'austerity'

But good old gideon is merely sowing the seeds for the next load of riots ;)

Agree with you big-all but it is a start..this along with what other peeps have sadi foreign aid and tax avoidance will all add to the coffers but as I said its the easy target they are going after ... bit like the motorist who are a easy target to convict and gain revenue whilst the criminals are running amok

Easy?

nice little leftie thoughtspeak there, total *******s, the welfare budget keeps growing under various governments, and has not ever been properly trimmed, with any talk of doing so threatening riots.

The welfare system is crippled.

To many people being given to much, and then some not given what they need because the first group is much bigger and bleeds the system.

HS2 is a one off cost, the £25 billion he wants to cut is from repeatable yearly costs, so HS2 is a drop in the bucket in that context.

He could of course get back anything between £40bn and £120bn annually (depending on whether you believe government or independant figures) from tax evasion/avoidance....

No not really.

That tax evasion is after they did everything they could to get that money, there will always be some degree of fraud.

The avoidance mostly consists of offshore accounts, and people fiddling with tax allowances, it will always exist unless you get rid of such tax allowances, which will do far more harm than good (discouraging investment and foriegn trade).

The rest is illigal activities (people not paying tax on black market goods).

It's easy to just blame the tax gap on the slimy tories doing double handed deals with their friends, but it's mostly nonsense.

I'm afraid that's because we are a bloody stupid country, or at least our rulers are. That's the main reason I refuse to contribute to foreign aid charities.

The stupid £10 oap's get at Christmas, what a waste of time that is.
I didn't even know what it was when I saw it in my bank account.

Yes, it probably costs more in paperwork to organise than it's worth.

We do a lot of stupid things in this country, as I've said before. (Waits for Discodancer to stick his oar in!)

Of which the vast majority is pensions, not unemployment benefit. Simple solution, involuntary euthanasia for the over 50's. I couldn't be bothered to correct your appalling spelling and grammar.

Why focus on unemployment benefit, I’m not, welfare excluding pensions is near 60 billion.

It's also a very tangled mess, you have pensioners with private housing living in poverty, and pensioners with social housing much better off, hence me calling the whole thing a mess.

Personally I don’t care much for reducing the welfare budget, but it certainly is possible to cut it quite a bit without leading to tales of people starving on the streets.

all depends on what you mean by "starving on the street"
there is many a family who have to choose wether to heat or to eat
