Has anyone read the book called the ragged trousered philanthropists? A very old book that was at one time the building trades bible, written by Robert Tressel, it was banned at one time for being classed as communistic.
It tells of the hard times sufferered by building trades workers, low pay and harsh working conditions, makes you want to cry on reading it.

I prefer the book about the honest banker.

I can't remember what it's called now but the title is something like 'F**k You'.

Yes i have read it. You'd think it was written at the turn of the last century but infact was written comparitively recently. If this was the way the working classes lived at the time it would explain why men flocked into the services at the start of the first world war. Whats really sad is having endured ww1 they were treated no better between the wars in the land they had made fit for heroes. A lot of the world still lives like this and we in the west live nice lives with cheap food, electronic goods and clothes on the back of their misery. However with the current round of austerity cuts about to start really biting these times may be about to return and bite us in the arse. Try explaining to the chinese company would owns your water supply that you can't pay. They treat their own people like ****e do you think they give a toss about you.
I also think the book is or has been serialised on radio 4 recently.

I read this about 10 years ago and it is really good.....I would advise those who have not read it to give it a go

This book is well worth reading it make no difference that the story is about the building trade it could be told today and be placed in a office.
The original story had its ending changed because the conservatives of the day didn't want a book about socialism to have any hope in its ending

Huge debts as left by all them Tory bankers, you should check your history books :)
