Looking for advice prior to calling engineer.

The above boiler has been leaking for some time out of the overflow, so had a quick look today. The PRV seems to be working fine.

When I turn on the radiators the pressure starts to climb pretty steady, and above 3 bar, when eventually the PRV lifts & dumps pressure.
Conversely, when the DHW is running, pressure drops.
Also, just noticed the DHW was running brown coloured, which might be ominous!

Think expansion vessel or heat exchanger are buggered!

Asking for advice as I may go for a new boiler.

Thank in advance.

Youre expansion vessel needs re-charging, many posts on here telling you how to do it, you have to do it properly though, no short cuts , good chance you will have to replace the PRV if it has been doing this for a while, not expensive and not a huge job

Thanks Ian. For info, why does the water go brown?

Cheers

because you are constantly adding fresh water to top the system up, fresh water has Oxygen so adds rust to your system, say where in the UK you are and someone may work in your area and be able to help you out, or be able to recommend someone that covers your area

Thanks. 45 mins N West of Glasgow
I've hopefully got someone lined up, but not 100% yet.

good chance you will have to replace the PRV

which could be read as the replacement of the PRV being a DIY task.

May I suggest the advice be worded as "good chance you will have to have the PRV replaced"

and the work carried out by a G3 accredited engineer "

Suggests that water from the CH system is bleeding into the DHW pipework.

Could be the secondary heat exchanger leaking CH to DHW or maybe when the CH pressure rises some of the CH water is pushing back through a filling loop ( which should be removed when not is use ) and into the domestic cold water supply

Thanks, the filling loop is isolated, so it cant be that.

yet again Benny boy you have no idea what you are talking about, no need to have G3 to replace a PRV on this boiler

no need to have G3 to replace a PRV on this boiler

PRV = Pressure Relief Valve

PRV = Pressure Regulating Valve

seems odd that an essential safety device ( PRV = Pressure Relief Valve ) can be fitted on this boiler by a non accredited person.

yes it is a pressure releif valve, and I couldnt give a monkeys fart what you think , anyone can change it, no need to be G3 accredited, stop giving out false information, you do not know what you are talking about

Seems I was wrong, oh dear,
yes you were, why you constantly feel the need to argue with the pros , I will never understand, but at least you have admitted your mistake which is good and will teach some others looking for the real answer, if they have the same problem
