My washer started this on the last wash, making the noise when it attempts to spin at full speed (the drum seems to turn ok, the induction motor seems to be working properly).

from what i've read it would appear to be the internal drum bearings that have gone, which requires the unit to essentially be stripped down to get access to - does anyone have a rough idea what this would cost to be fitted by an engineer (and, as a result, if it's worth it)?

replacing Bearings repair is never a cheap repair it is labour intensive and also may require a inner drum replacement so this would be the time to take into account the age of the wasing machine, cost of repair compared with cost of new machine
