You will need a replacement piece, remove the damaged edge, glue the new piece in, plan the mahagony down, shape it, with spokeshave, sand it, stain and polish. And you are done! :)

Looks to me, judging by the plinth, that it is not particularly old. So I reckon veneer on MDF or maybe HDF, with a solit timber rim. You could try to inlay new timber but easier to sand the lacquer off the rim, then repair the damage with wax crayon (The sort sold for furniture repair which are melted into the damage and then sanded flat) before repainting with a matched coloured varnish.
