I have a mahogany table that is quite badly marked especially around the edges. I could sand it right back and refinish but does anyone have any other suggestions as to how to deal with these marks.

Is it solid timber, looks veneered.?

Looks to me, judging by the plinth, that it is not particularly old. So I reckon veneer on MDF or maybe HDF, with a solit timber rim. You could try to inlay new timber but easier to sand the lacquer off the rim, then repair the damage with wax crayon (The sort sold for furniture repair which are melted into the damage and then sanded flat) before repainting with a matched coloured varnish.
