Sorry 4 buttin in ,I guess the reason 4 lack of circulation could be the reduced running temp of boiler now on gas . What is the boiler stat set on? sounds like the circ through the rad is on a ballance just before the stat shuts ya boiler off. try the boiler stat on max 4 hot water only. see if rad gets & stays hot 4 1hr. Try heating with pump on speed 1 to see if rad still remains to keep hot.

1. Boiler make and model.
2. Exact model of your Elson tank.
Did the old boiler have 2 pipes, 4 pipes or 3 and a common return.
Did the old boiler have a pump and if so was it on the return.
What size pipes are used for the primaries and the heating.
Is the new pump on the flow or the return.
What controls the heating.
Where's the cold feed and vent.
Does the Hot get hot as before or is it sluggish when the heatings turned on

Thanks everyone for all the interest. I'll try and answer as many of the questions as I can.
The old solid fuel boiler was a Rayburn Rhapsody fuel burner with integral back boiler.
The gas back boiler is a BAXI Bermuda 50/4E.
The number of pipes on the old boiler I don't know, but I believe this was not altered by the switch to gas.
Yes the old boiler did have a pump, for the CH only.
Heating is controlled by a programmer + a room thermostat.
Hot water is normally fine, but can take around 2hrs to reheat a full bathsworth if the CH is also on.
The ELSON is described (I think) as a 'dual input indirect system'. I don't have the model number, but it looks like a pretty basic model.
I'm pretty sure the cold water tank in the Elson is just a header tank, as all cold taps in the house are mains.
The suggestion from 'bab' is interesting; the rad being just on the balance point with the boiler does ring true. Being a gravity system, the boiler is governed by its thermostat and does fire on and off many times during the day.
The thermostat is set at '7' out of a maximum of '10' but is not graduated in degrees.
By experiment I have found that setting any higher than '7' gives faster water reheat, but makes all the main rads too hot!

Without the information requested, go for a good flush on the primary circuit and check the connections either end for scale.
I think its connected wrong, but what the hell The crystal ball is busted.
Is the hot water only the same as before or worse.
And for the record they don't make a 50/4 e, choose a 45/4e or a 57/4e.

This thread has all the elements of a classic hijack
Anyhow back to the original post, found a hole in the hot water draw off pipe under the floor (concrete). So most of the heated water was heading south to Auz.
I replaced a small section of the pipe which was 3/4" and was insulated in old hessian type lagging so I think it must be a fair age.
Suggested the whole pipe is going to have to be replaced, not a popular bunny when I said this, pipe runs across the living room floor.
