This boiler was working fine until Sunday morning, and has now decided to lay down and die.

I have plenty of DIY experience, but have no intention of messing around with a complex boiler system. However I would be grateful for an indication of what the problem might be before calling an engineer.

Many thanks for any advice.

The system has required a water top up every few weeks, and was low on pressure when it packed in. I had a look "under the bonnet" and found that a small leak was dripping water from the pump onto a component underneath, this has corroded.

This component has a wire loom entering it, and either two or three pipes, so I guess is a solenoid valve of some sort.

Many thanks kevplumb.

The wiring loom in question has three wires, brown black and white. The valve or whatever is connected to the water rather than gas system.

Is there any way I can check if this is the problem?

if you can dismantle the cover from the switch and use a multimeter

you can test the switch

chances are its full of water

and turn the power off first
