Need mouse control advice

Bait the traps with something with a high fat content. Jam, Chocolate spread, peanut butter etc....Cheese DEFINATELY NOT!

Personally, if there are children or pets around I would encase the traps in something (i have dome traps bait stations) or place where children/pets cannot get to. As for using toxic bait...where children are present - its an ABSOLUTE NO NO! Unless it is in a tamperproof bait station.

Mice are sporadic feeders and so feed little and often from each area. They forage for food, so if you room is quite large and you cannot find the ingress point, then using one trap may not be enough. Try a few more.

The best option is locate the ingress point and place bait/traps there. Give it a few days, if you catch one, reset it and leave for another few days.

If all clear after that, the seal the ingress point using foam AND wire mesh or wire wool. Mice will simply gnaw though the foam unless you give it some guts!

I would not fill the hole first before reducing the numbers....the mice will simply look for another way in. After all, something in you house has attracted them in in the first place, so their not going to just simply pack up and buggered off!

/...., wire wool is very good against rodent type vermin /.....

be careful with wirewool, it burns very easily. If it's contaminted with oil or grease, it can spontaneously ignite.

Good point herring, stainless pan scourrers are good for this plus they won't rust and stain.
Milo is also spot on with his bait advice, I baited a trap last night with some left over pate from Christmas and caught a mouse by this morning.

Jam has zero fat, cheese has lots.

Not saying you're wrong about what they like - I know they go for chocolate, and that their love of cheese is almost a myth, but clearly it's not a fat content thing...

My point was that I was trying to give the guy some help having worked in this field for a number of years - and therefore probably know a little more than most on this particular subject.

It appears, that your comments have been to try and correct me, when all you actually needed to do, if you had a worth while piece of information that you think this guy would benefit from, is to write that.

FACT - cheese is a high fat food. But not especially popular.
FACT - jam is an extremely low fat food.
FACT - a simple choice of a high-fat bait may not be a good one.

Have you folks tried using glue board traps for mouse control? This trap works mostly because the rodents don't catch on to the fact that there is a trap till it it's too late. baiting the thing is easy enough, just place the lure in the middle of the board. Now what to use as bait? there is no right answer... but there are good selections. Peanut butter, nutella and sweetrolls are fine choices.[/url]

High density expanding foam, will seal most voids, easy to use but wear gloves, it's horrible stuff to get on your skin.
