Plaster or Lining Paper

My loft extension is coming on leaps and bounds and i had originally thought that i would put a couple of layers of lining paper on the plaster board but now i am thinking of plastering it.

Two questions though, it is worth plastering it or would it be better to put up a couple of layers of lining paper?

The second question is, the plasterboard is straight edge and not the tapered stuff. Do i need to put that mesh stuff on the joins and fill them or is it just a case of putting the mesh stuff on the joins and plastering straight onto it.

The joins are reasonably close although there are some rather large gaps between the wall and ceiling but i guess i will have to fill these with some sort of filler or just do as best i can then cove it to hide it away.

Now what answer do you seriously expect to get from a plastering forum other than to plaster it ; the decorating forum might give you a different answer though . Plaster skimming is the way to go, it’s stronger, will be quicker, less messy (certainly less dusty), look better & last longer; square edge is the wrong PB for tape & fill anyway.

If the boards have been close butted as they should be then no filling is necessary but if you’ve left gaps they must be filled before taping over with reinforcing mesh including all wall/ceiling junctions. What exactly are “some rather large gaps between wall & ceiling” ? If they are too large, you need to let in strips of PB & then tape over or you will get continually reoccurring cracks in the plaster.

If you’ve never plastered before, you should be aware what you’re taking on; it’s one of the most difficult trades to master & it will most likely end in tears for you if you’ve no previous experience which it doesn’t sound as if you do. If you employ a decent spread it’ll look fabulous & he will do all the filling & taping required; if you DIY & make a pigs ear of it, it’ll look terrible.
