Tyrelene is a type oy polyester/polymer coating and can be over painted, using a stiff brush first to remove any dust or grime.

I knew there was something wrong here it's Tyrolean, I was having a look on google to check on any form of initial prep was needed and in my haste have offered the wrong info. Anyway it's a cement based render containing a form of polymer.

Ed,

Yes you can overpaint it, I am not really having a very good morning here am I. Perhaps a hangover, and a house full of very naughty grandchildren may have had something to do with it, my apoligies to you.

This stuff is a serious pain in the butt to paint. I've done a few and never been happy with the finish. Your roller clogs up as you try and roll the paint with all loose material despite brushing off, and you have to work the brush into the surface. I won't do them anymore because i feel the only way to do them properly is by spray application.

I think everyone is getting muddled up.

Tyrolean can be painted and doesn't usually come off and clog the roller. That is usually the case with the stones on walls that have been sparred/dashed. Tyrolean is applied with a flicker gun or machinne sprayed and should set so solid so that when brushed nothing falls off. It can still be a pain in the butt to paint though!
I have used water based masonry paint numerous times without problems, but obviously the texture of the surface gathers dirt much easier than flat walls so a self cleaning or pliolite resin masonry paint may be the best option in the long run.
