Dulux sued because its BRILLIANT WHITE paint fades to yellow

Write to them and complain!! I did and got £200 of paint vouchers and an apology, its hardly a bandwagon, if you are not happy with a product or it is defective complain, its really no that difficult.

There is an element of bandwagoning. Whilst I do have some sympathy for punters, it has always been the case that OB has yellowed, it just happens that the process is accelerated.

I painted a dark hallway with white gloss pre2010 that went yellow after about 8 months. I had warned the client that it would yellow. After it had yellowed I eventually convinced them to leave their internal doors open to let the light in. The light has lead to a slow reversal of the process.

Should they be entitled to a refund? Perhaps all OB paints should have always carried a warning but I suspect that most people expect that it will yellow in due course regardless of any warnings on the tin.

None of the paint makers have done anything illegal but they could have been more upfront about things.

I complained after Christmas before this all went in the papers and watchdog etc, my paint went yelloe in weeks literally therefore their paint was faulty its all about what you expect a paint to be able to do and how long the colour should stay "brilliant white". I do agree with people stating they were sueing Dulux is a tad stupid but the least people should be intiltled to is a refund and if a company the size of dulux is willing to compensate me all the better. Like I said paint slowly yellowing over time (years) would be acceptable, brilliant white going yellow in weeks IMO isnt.

Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum but I joined after reading the dulux problem as we have had the same scenario at our house. We moved in the middle of last year and did major decorating with dulux brilliant white gloss......and it's all gone yellow!!

I read earlier in this section that the blue lidded tins (which are the ones we have) were the ones that replaced the white lidded tins and are the ones that are okay!?!? ......so now I'm well confused

I've got no idea what happened to all the receipts, but I did have a problem with one of the dulux emulsions and I complained and they were marvellous about it. I bought a match pot (can't remember colour .....apricot crush?!?) and liked it, went back and bought 5 litres and it was a completely different colour!! There was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing involved with testing both samples etc but eventually they sent me a recipe for the match pot colour and a voucher to get 5 litres mixed up!

I won't worry to complain about this latest problem, as I'm really too busy for it......and it sounds like they deserve a bit of a break from me!!
....But I am interested in what paint forum members can recommend to redo this lot with?!

It's our entire house so I'm absolutely gutted about this, but at least if I buy something tried and tested by you guys hopefully whatever goes on next will last a few years!?

Thanks for that! I'm going to start the bathroom in the next day or so Im glad I know what to buy for it! .......such a minefield of tins when you go shopping!

I used Johnstones One coat Satin - water-based/acrylic the other day on my skirting, it goes on lovely, much thinner and less tacky than oil based (less hairs lost from the brush)

The only bad point is because its not as gloopy as gloss you have to apply thinner to avoid runs and it is less prone to "self covering" IE when using oil based the brush marks will blend as it dries. You do get some brush marks, but this doesn't really bother me. Also, 1 coat is breeze IMO. I used a single coat of oil based undercoat (to give it a little more knock resistance) left to dry for 48 hours.. and 2 coats of the Johnstones.

drying time is much faster too i think you can recoat it in 4 hours or something.

We spent 25K on a new home extension, decorated the rest of our house to match, used Dulux brilliant white gloss on all doors and woodwork, fitted new carpets everywhere after decorating. Now today I have a offer from Dulux of a £100 and some free paint! They used a cheap fix to keep the EU hippies happy and released a untested product to the consumer they should be made to pay. I will never use Dulux or ICI products again!

You are absolutely right! ....... Unfortunately though there can never be adequate compensation for something like this, ....because as you say, the 'correct' order of painting then laying new carpets / flooring, cant be undone now.

I'm really glad I didn't pursue it with them having read your post! £100 is just insulting, and would have made me really upset. It's all the wasted time and effort that you can't get back.

But, realistically they can't do much more than offer a small token!

Life eh?!? Never mind, at least we are healthy enough to paint it all again! ......and while there are companies like dulux around we will never have time to be bored!!!

It's all oil based paint - not just Dulux.

Dulux has got nothing to do with ICI, they sold the brand to Akzo who had to sell Crown so they could buy it. If ICI still owned Dulux i'm sure they would have handled things much better, Akzo are slowly destroying what was once an excellent brand.

Personally i find the blue lid gloss ok, i can't find a decent WB gloss but they're getting there. Satin use sikkens satura, Eggshell F&B and undercoat Sikkens BL, all are WB/hybrid and are excellent.

In time the budget brands will catch up, looks like johnstones are there or there abouts, but i need guarantees that i wont have to go back to a job which is worth far more than the shelf price

Hi all, a quick question from a newbie.

I spent quite a bit of time sanding all of the exterior wood ready for either priming or undercoat.

On the recommendation of a friend who is a decorator I chose all oil based Dulux products.

Primer for wood (interior and exterior)

Undercoat Professional for wood metal

Non drip B/W gloss for wood metal

Trade Brilliant white gloss

I have just finished using one litre of the primer and although it came out of the tin a 'pinkish' colour it has now after a day turned yellowish.

It's a porch area and front door so plenty of UV light.Is it normal for primer to do this?

Not too worried as it's primer, although I am worried the other finishes could turn out like this?

The fact sheet gives a drying time of 16 hours but today when I checked ready to flat back and it was still soft?

You need to be using products specifically designed for exterior decoration. although i think the normal dulux trade gloss does say interior/exterior you are far better using an exterior system such as weathershield. The drying time is very slow but its not bad gear. Exterior paints will not yellow to the same degree as internal as they are bathed in natural UV light.
Oil based primers do look a bit yellow so i wouldn't worry about it, but again you should use an exterior grade because they allow more flexability through the system, this needs to be constant from primer to gloss as it will fail without the correct products.

Just as a foot note to this thread i did a door in my dark dining room in blue lid dulux gloss about 5/6 months ago and its still fine, so i think the problem is sorted now

Yup, they are multi purpose so I guess not as good as a dedicated exterior product.

I tried to avoid the 'one tin for everything' approach but the shop staff tend to point you in that direction when asking for advice.

Dulux seem to do a lot of products too, making selection difficult.

What sort of drying time would you anticipate for primer before de-nibing?
