plumbing and heating trouble

The manual for the pump tells you how Grundfos want it fitted within the system.

The donkey that fitted the system might not have read this.

The pump has to pump towards the silver box (following the pipe work of course). Otherwise it is pumping water the wrong way round the system.

Trust me. I have fitted more of these than you have ;).

i would put money on that lol ..... it was upside down in the first place which would put the arrow on the other side pumping towards the valve so i will change it back so that it's right. after i have done that and taken some water out the tank what would you look at next ? i did see something about a thermocouple. could that be anything to do with it not staying lit. it will stay on for roughly 40 seconds. i have all the rads off shut off at the mo too.

Turn on a couple of rads. Turn the pump around.

Drain the tank so that it has a couple of inches of water above the outlet (adjust the valve to suit).

Refire the boiler.

Don't start fiddling with thermocouples of the insides of the boiler.

See how that works once you have all the air out.

Make doubly doubly sure you have opened the pump service valves too.

Had an underling scratching his 'arris for over an hour wondering why the boiler wasn't working on a job. Basics, Basics, Basics!

The small one is for your ch. it sounds like its possibly blocked. On the feed as your saying its not draining. It will be above the pump the 15mm pipe.

Misread the OP about the cisterns.....

Yes, you need to check that connection where the 15mm pipe form the small tank joins the 22mm pipe work in the airing cupboard.

Will be clogged.

Still need to do what I said though.

just when i think i am getting to know the system :-( ...... i can do the rads and the pump. (adjust which valve ? where is it ? ) and what is the pump service valve and where ? and i will take your advice and not open the boiler :-) thank you ...... is that the 3 way valve ?

The brass valves either side of the pump are the service valves. Make sure they are open when you turn the pump around.

THe valve on the header tank is the one that needs adjusting - just bend the arm down until it shuts the water off at the right level.

ok i will have a look and see what i can find. just trying to keep up with it all and make a list of things to go through so i can tick them off and eliminate them :-)

cheers for your help bella.

now i am with you :-) yeah the valves are open. anti clock wise right ? if not then im wrong lol. i will sort the valve out in the fand e tank and get that all level too !

cheers dan !

Just turning them anti-clockwise does not ensure they are open.

To be fairly sure you need to close them and then open them which is about 3-4 turns.

The mechanism can jam or even snap and seem to be turned anticlockwise but still be closed!

thanks for the heads up tony !! when i took the old one off i did clean and file down all to give the pump a good seal on the rubber washers. and i did have try them when they were off and they seemed to open and close ok. but i will double check when i take it back off. thank you tony. its good to know all the little things to do as i can know for sure what it isn't.

thanks tony !

i am away for a few days seeing family but i will give you a list of all i have done and checked then i will let you all know what happened. hopefully i can get it sorted. a bit more too it than i first thought but good to learn new things :-)

Possible blockage by sounds of it. Or perhaps a one pipe system and/ or someone's shut a valve off!

Nath

Hi nath ! just got back from seeing family. now back to sorting this mess out lol. how do i know if its a one pipe system ? is there a way to check if a pipe is blocked ?.

all the best lee

thank you !

When you drain the the ch system does the water level in the tank go down. Have you checked for filters

do you mean the larger tank ? if so it does empty. but i didnt look at the small one. if it does not is that a sure sign its blocked ?. where and what do the filters look like and where would they be ?

thanks again

lee

Lee, you've replaced the parts and unfortunately the bit you are struggling with is normally gained from experience.

I would cut your losses and call a plumber in, it won't be as expensive if you're certain no other parts need replacing. Otherwise you might drop your laptop in the f+e tank, making this all very costly!
