Woodstain, varnish, satinwood..? Confused!

Hi all, I am in the middle of decorating my lounge and have a question regarding the colour.

In the past, varnish has been used on the doors and skirting boards (all of which were installed at different times), therefore, they all have a different shade of mahogany. The older doors and skirting are darker, the newer ones are lighter.

I still want to keep the wood effect in the lounge as per the picture below:

But I'm not sure what to put on there to even the skirting/door colours out and not just make things darker.

There's so much choice and I'm stuck on what to get. Do I get varnish again? Do I get satinwood? Do I get woodstain?

My aim is to keep the wood effect, so I do not want to cover the grain, but I also want to make the skirting and doors the same colour/shade... [/img]

Why not get a satin varnish and use that everywhere as the final top coat as something that blends all the work.

For the areas that need darkening to give the consistent shade everywhere you will need something with stain or colour in them. You will need to check or guess well and decide on a suitable colour that doesn't over darken the current lighter areas.

I'd be tempted to lightly coat light areas, let them dry and then add further coats rather than attempt an instant one coat solution.

Course wire wool balls are a great way to key wood finishes.

And I hope your plan the fix that daft gap at the bottom.

Hi Chris, thanks for your advice.

Sounds like a good idea to darken certain areas and not the other but it seems like alot of it would be guess work..?

I'm tempted to use a one coat solution, maybe Dulux woodsheen? As I have alot of work starting on my house in the next week (carpet, fireplace etc).

And yes, I just purchased some decorative moulding today from B&Q to fill that gap so don't worry, it'll be gone soon
