So what would you consider as being reliable?

So I have a dreaded Ideal Isar for 9 years now, its just started its 10 year. In that time it has had the following

1) leaking diverter valve casing
2) Expansion Vessel failure
3) Leaking Diverter Valve casing

The last two repairs were in the last year and bit.

I was just wondering has anyone had a combi condensing boiler run for 10 years without a problem, and what would you consider as reliable? One fault in 10 years?

My boiler has been in 8 years now, I have it serviced every year, in that time the secondary heat exchanger started failing on the hot water. I replaced it my self for £60. So far it's been very good but I have been thinking about having a new kitchen this year so I might have a new floor standing boiler put in there as mine is it the garage at the mo.

Won't get that on an Intergas - it doesn't have a secondary heat exchanger

Floor standing boilers are rare beasts now - Woofter make a couple but can't think of any others

That's where I'm struggling to find one.. I had to go that intergas website before as I've never heard of that I read the info about no secondary heat exchanger. I did the search for suppliers on their website and plumb base about a mile away are stockests but I think they are more suppliers than actual gas fitters. I would definitely consider one if I could find the fitter as well. What does keeping the 10 year warranty entail? Serviced by intergas? I would really like to keep my "gas man" if I could.
Would you recommend them boilers then?

Yes, Plumbase are suppliers only, they don't install. To qualify for the ten year warranty your installer needs to be Platinum 5 registered - essentially take a day out to go on a training course with Intergas. There's a Find An Installer section on the website. Once fitted, it must be serviced annually by Gas Safe Registered engineer with a boilers qualification

I recommend Intergas above all other makes for most applications

A proper service as detailed in the manual makes a lot of difference. A service carried out by nearly analysing the flue gases is pointless

Thanks muggles, I have just search the installers my guy is not on the list. But he is always posting pictures on his Facebook from attending different training days. I might see if I can talk him into becoming a platinum 5 star man.

Dan/Muggles, can you use the open vented on a sealed system? Available literature says max pressure 2.5bar and nothing about using it on a sealed system with a 3bar PRV!

My parents property built in 1976 came with a wall mounted balanced flue Glow worm Spacesaver boiler. When it got to be 30 years old even though it had never failed and everything on it was original, because they thought it was getting old, didn't want reliability issues, and were frightened by tales of obsolescence, they decided to replace it with a new Glow worm Combi CXI, which has either broken down, leaked or caught fire at least 4 times in the last 10 years.

So, the first I would say was reliable, the second not.

Oddly though, like boilers, cars have also become more complicated over the same time period, and like boilers much of the erm.... progress is in the name of energy efficiency, but cars it seems have become far more reliable, but with boilers the opposite seems to be true.

Yes mate, but you need to follow the usual rules about expansion vessels and prv's. You can use any of the boilers open vented too just unplug the pressure sensor. Pipe the feed and vent into the return.
