House Server - question regarding the support to the main water tank

Hi, could I ask for some advice please. A relative is just purchasing their first house (3 bed semi built 1985) and the Home Buyer report includes a section about the water tank in the loft

Upgrading the nature of support to the main tank would be prudent. Tanks must never be placed on sheets of chipboard or similar but always on slatted decks.

This issue has been rated as a 2 (Defects that need repairing or replacing but are not considered to be either serious or urgent. The property must be maintained in the normal way)

I just wondered if this is something to be concerned about as I have checked by own tank and it also appears to be on chipboard. I am guessing that the tank has always been like this.

Total rubbish - slatted decks and plastic tanks are a recipe for disaster. The tank would gradually sag between the slats and split, especially if it were to get warm, which can happen.

They should be on marine-grade ply

I've never come across a cistern manufacturer that recommends a slatted base. It's usually recommended that a continuous solid platform is used.

Chipboard isn't a suitable base as it deforms and looses strength when wet. That said there are probably many thousands of cisterns in lofts on chipboard platforms.

yeah but ply and chipboard are very different things.. Take note on the recommendation to upgrade to marine ply.

Thanks very much indeed for all the advice. Upgrading this sounds like a pretty straightforward (and hopefully not too expensive) job so we can put it to one side for a minute as it does not appear to be a show stopper in relation to the purchase. Thanks again for all the advice from everyone.
