Tyres, Royal Black

Only intended to do an oil/filter change on the neice's 1.3i KA today with Quantum LL 507.00 and Mann filter but ended having to sort out slow puncture - the nail in tyre type.

Took it to a tyre center, establish for a few years, on the local ind est. Actually, 1st time I've been.

They looked at it but only 1/2" from the shoulder, so a new tyre.

Passenger tyre by Royal Black who I've never heard off but seems a decent tyre.

Next tasks on the KA are fix the n/s front abs sensor and fit a new number plate lamp is missing altogether.

How can you tell it's a decent tyre by sight? I'm notoriously tight but I wouldn't have an unknown make tyre on my car.

A valid point, how can I tell on sight? .............. even with established, you can only go on reputation.

Actually, of the three local tyre places, he was the only one with the right size in stock in the event the repair was not doable.

The chap's a sole trader and trying to build a business so presumably, would not risk selling anything he thought was tat. He's got a lot of 5 star reviews on FB and the tyre site is professionally laid out.

Well I have heard of Kyoto tyres. I did have some on my Kia Sedona once until I found some even cheaper ones. They are cheap but tyres do have to meet certain standards and I didn't have any problems with the Kyoto ones apart from more road noise.

One irony of car tyres is some folk will only buy in the expensive range and yet happily ram the curb with said precious tyres when parking.

I don't think those standards include subjective areas like handling and braking ( wet/dry/snow/ice etc ), do they ? Just saying as a general point.

On a small tyre like a Ford Ka is it really a significant saving over a mid range tyre? I see on EBay I could get 4 unknown brand tyres for about the price of a Michelin. Surely they can't be any good?

I would have thought so. Even cheap tyres have to pass stringent tests before they can be sold. National tyres have a chart that describes things like handling and braking for various tyres and their tyres have labels on them corresponding to the chart. I would think other tyre suppliers do the same but I only use National because they are the closest to my house.
