Mk2 Kuga Powershift (title edited)

Quite a bit of kit, that....have you considered a Toyota Land Cruiser? One of the best tow vehicles I've ever come maintained with very tough transmission.

Quite a few have mentioned the Toyota.

I'm not in a position this year to change vehicles but hopefully next year I can do something about it.
 
Well my wife text me while I was at work on Saturday morning to let me know the gearbox was playing up again!, she didn't even take it off the drive.

Sunday morning was spent with my 12 year old son doing his MTB up, new bars/ shifter / derailleur / tyres etc.

He was chuffed to bits and our with his mates all afternoon so job well done!.

Car wise I did a Gearbox TCU reset, clutch and shift point relearn (with FORScan). I replaced the oil filter only as well xxxx. The TCU had not stored any error codes this time.

Drove the car and couldn't get it to fault.

I've got a Stainless Mesh filter coming from Australia of all places, cost an arm and a let but I believe the paper/ poly gauze filters are causing an issue.

At least with the Stainless Mesh I can see exactly what it looks like, and its cleanable so filter for life (lol).

Pit a picture up of a new plastic spring guide kit as well for amusement..

That filter - is it a pre main filter unit or on its own? I would think you would be dealing with micron size particles and have never seen a washable oil one!
It looks like the reboot has sorted things for now, but what a performance!
On a lighter note, that's a cracking bit of kit junior has! Hope he has lots of safe fun.

It's a 30 micron washable external filter.

There is a pre pump filter but that requires the gearbox casings split to replace it!. Shocking really.

The boy is enjoying his bike, just got back in; "rained off!".
 
I don't know if I have gone slightly insane but I have managed to find a 33,000 mile old 2016 gearbox for an acceptable price.

Whether I can code it's TCU to my car or not is debatable at the moment but worst case I can make one good 'box out of two.

At least then I can take my time stripping my original one to build a "bullet proof" gearbox.

I've got too much invested now to get shut of it!.

That'll be another few days laid under the bloody thing again!.
 
I hope you are doing the right thing Keith......I have been down a similar route before and would probably do the same as you.
I didnt know where to draw the line, thinking ‘this will definitely sort it’ - it didn’t:eek:

The thing is, you did everything right with the existing one.....!
If it was mine, I’d fit it and then bale out - Id be having sleepless nights by now.

I know what you mean!.

Realistically I need to get another couple of years out of it so damage limitation now.

Maybe this one will be a "good" one, who knows.. I've got enough oil to service it every 6 months now!.

It's a similar fault, I have noticed some random odd noises around the clutch pack area though so maybe the even clutch has had it or plastic debris is effecting the clutch operation/ stroke.

I would have thought it would fail a clutch learn cycle if the clutches had packed in though?.

Need to find a way to "clone" my TCU onto the new box, there's always a way though!.

I have found some clutch disks that are 30% higher torque rated, so they will be in the "bulletproof" gearbox.

If I can get 20,000 miles out of the replacement gearbox, use our caravan again it will have been a good investment.

To be fair I'm legged well onto it now, having a spare gearbox ready to go isn't a bad idea, engine's are good for 200,000+ miles.

Rest of the car is mint, so if I can solve the gearbox reliability then it's a keeper.

I wonder why there aren't more identical failures....maybe there are.

There are plenty of failures!. When gearbox shops say they are "very experienced with these gearboxes" you know it's not just one or two..

Time will tell.
