Of course, he might not have been referring to the colour of skin or religion of people, but something deeper. Consider his reason for leaving the UK:

His main criticism of London / England / UK was the right wing press “lying and triviality” and the fighting about Brexit.

It's hard to believe that a racist person would move to the Caribbean to be among friendly black people. It's much easier to believe that the right wing press, that had been criticised by him, would twist his words and tell more lies about him.

Very good point. All we do is argue about it. We really would probably be happier if we just talked about something nicer, that we have some control over.
Maybe he would have been better off saying that England is no longer the respectable, open, forward thinking, liberal nation it once was. The Gentlemen of politics have gone and the press is controlled by hating media gurus with their own political and economic agendas. Time to move on.
