Just wondering how you work out where to hit the nail through the osb into something solid. Are there any tricks?

When getting nails out to remove old roof are the tools in picture - chisel away wood around old nail to be removed and hammer the tools required?

I copied the previous roof sizes which means the osb roof bits don't meet over a joist. Is that ok?

Keitai, good evening.

i tend to mark the center line of the roof joist on to the fascia, both ends, then transfer that mark on to the roof surface, using either a chalk line or straight edge mark the center of the joist

Or careful measurements of joist center to outside wall surface, deduct the ply overhang and carry on as as above?

As for the OSB not resting on a joist??? not a good idea at all!! suggest you fit another joist at the OSB joint, if the OSB is left unsupported it is a hazard to you when on the roof also over time the unsupported area of OSB will move and the slight movement will cause the felt to crack?

Removal of the old nails? suggest you consider simply knocking the nail out, using a hammer simply hit the point of the nail and drive it out, don,t bother with trying to get at the nail heads, just hit the point of the nail.

I'll put another little joist where two osb meet.

Regarding nail removal I meant what's the best way to get the nail out from old roof? From the top I mean. I chiseled the wood out around the head then tried to get it out when there was more space..

OK if you can access the underside of the OSB simply gently [using a hammer] tap the old roof material away from the joists.

Sorry if I got it wrong, but I assumed that because in the image posted there was what appeared to be a pebbled pathway below the roof material??
