I have a CH system that has been losing pressure every couple of months or so for some time. A few months ago this got worse. There were no signs of leaks on the ceilings so I assumed it must be something under the ground floor floorboards.

The system became very noisy and needed topping up within 48 hours. I was anticipating lifting up laminate flooring etc to find the leak, which would've been a lot of hassle.

Then I heard about the perfume trick. Which made a lot of sense to me. So I thought I would try it. When the pressure dropped I switched the system off. Opened up the bleed screw on the top of a towel rail on the top floor and added half a bottle of aftershave. I then put the bleed screw back pumped up the system and started it up again.

After a couple of hours I got the small strong smell of aftershave in one room, where the hot water tank and CH pump was situated. On closer inspection, I noticed that the bottle air vent above was leaking. The little cap the top of it was loose and water dripping out. So I screwed it shut.

Job done.

While searching for a solution to this problem, I found so many complicated suggested solution. But this was so simple and a genius that it saved me a lot of time and money.

If you have a leak, try this first (use cheap perfume, obviously)
