Fire protection glass

I have a flat which has a small hall which accesses out onto the building hallway. The wall is pretty much all glass and it is the wire stuff and frosted.

I am upgrading the insulation/windows etc on the flat and want to improve this glass wall to be more energy efficient.

So i intend on making the left and right glazed fixed panels solid walls with insulation inside. I will however keep 2 small windows higher up. This way i get more privacy and better insulation.,

Can i get small double glazed units made up, but in a fire rated glass ? Is toughened glass ok to use ? Any idea on the cost. Likely to be 50x 60cm in size for each one.

I will change the door to a solid one, but with glass in the upper half. This will need to be fire rated.

Fire rated glass is about £1000/m2, toughened glass is not fire rated. Why do you want it double glazed? For fire rated windows you can't just throw it together, ideally you'll get windows made to measure from specialist supplier's.

You can get double glazed half hour fire rated glass, it will be expensive , as Freddie points out . You can use the wired glass , which will be cheaper, or a product called Pyroguard , which is clear. As stated std toughened glass is NOT fire rated. Its not just the glass you have to take into account though , you will also Intumescent Sealant or tape and for a door way there is also how its fitted....

You mean indoors to indoors?

Why do you want to insulate between two indoor spaces?

Is your old glass Georgian Wired Obscure? It used to be popular in smoke doors. I don't know if it is still considered appropriate.

The owners of the building hallway presumably have a responsibility to protect it from a fire in your flat, so would need to agree your proposals to change the barrier. A hallway will be an escape route.

I don't know if it is still considered appropriate.

Its still considered a fire glass, just no longer a safety glass ( so couldn't be used in the doors or side panels anyway these days )

The hallway is not heated, hence I want to improve the wall insulation. Plus privacy

the hallway is also part mine as the 7 flats are freehold. All fire doors into the flats are the flat owners responsibility.

so I need to look into what I can do and which glass option to use.
I will check out the glass options
