Train operators have been under pressure from the Govt. to cut costs.

They are reported to be furious that the decision to scrap many ticket offices, agreed by the DoT, has been reversed.

But do you think the companies were going to pass those savings on to passengers, in the form of cheaper ticket prices?

Or were they going to boost the dividends to shareholders?
 
From what I've seen it may have been to reduce the amount of abuse the counter staff used to receive during periods of low staffing. Station I used to use on a regular basis would reduce staff when the queue reduced to 5 punters (travellers) and take age to up the staffing numbers again. The poor staff used to receive quite a lot of abuse when that happened.
