Most effective product to kill mold? (Edit: Seems it wasn't mould)

Hi all.

Ignoring all aspects of trying to prevent mold from growing back, e.g. conditions, ventilation, etc. can anyone recommend a product that will penetrate all the way to the root and KILL mold that has grown on a painted wall and looks like tiny little bulbs cracking through the paint like little chicks from an egg? Well, I'm assuming it's mold!

Obviously I have read the usual things on the internet such as bleach and vinegar, both of which have contradicting opinions and the same goes for commercial mold products.

Assuming that I'm not too concerned about the appearance of the wall, can I just spray/apply something and let the mold die without having to wipe or disturb it?

Thanks for any suggestions.

bleach and vinegar

You probably know this, but never mix bleach with an acid (i.e. vinegar) as it has the potential to release chlorine gas.

There are various mould sprays, including the HG one, and I suspect they all have similar formulations. I currently have one branded “Astonish”, possibly from Lakeland. It worked well enough on some blackened sealant. Amusingly the product prominently advises that it is vegan - which only makes me wonder if there is some alternative, meat-based, recipe!

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, I came across HG mould spray during my research as well but your recommendation led me to research it and it does seem to be highly recommended, so I might give this a try. I'm not sure if it does still need some wiping though.

I also came across the Cillit Bang one. Thanks, since these are all relatively ok prices, I can always try more than one if one doesn't work.

It's not I that I don't want to deal with the source of the mold. I'm just looking for a quick, immediate killer and then spend time/money considering options regarding keeping the mold away. In this particular case, the mold has grown only on the areas where items were place near the wall leaving only a small gap, so I am also assuming that simply leaving a bigger gap may sort the problem from a long term point of view.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice!

Might not even be mould; from the description it could be salts from the masonry. In that case it would still be a source of damp driving it..

Once it has killed off the mould ( if that is what it is) you will need to brush off the residue left behind (dead mould ) with a stiff brush after a couple of weeks. As you say letting light and air to the area should prevent it recurring.

endecotp, sorry, just noticed I hadn't answered your post! I didn't mean a mixture of bleach and vinegar, I meant these were separate options suggested, but thanks for the caution though, as I was not aware of the dangerous mixture. This one doesn't sound vegan! Haha.

Yes, it is possible that it is salts and not mold as I am no expert. This looks like little nodules, not residue and only where there were items placed close to the wall.

Thanks for the tip about wiping it down.

Bleach was one of the options suggested on the web, but as I said, the information was contradicting. I'm sure one place said it didn't kill mold, but I think the B&Q website advised it.

I was actually thinking about whether a non-spray option would be better for avoiding tiny particles flying around all over the place, but I've already bought the HG spray so will try it out, haven't used it yet.

Hi all.

Just an update. The HG spray doesn't seem to have worked, but I must admit, I had forgotten the advice given above which I've just seen again now when reading through the thread about needing to brush off the dead mold. How would I know it's dead anyway?

The strong chlorine smell was quite bad to put up with, even with windows open!

Just to reiterate, the mold is not like the common black mold stains. It's like tiny little woody twigs that break through the plaster/paint. Haven't touched any (with gloves) yet, so I don't know if they're hard or soft.

Will try Cillit Bang next.

Thanks.

Sounds like salts or lichen!

Try and get a photo.
