The Weather Today is...

I recorded, a new rain record for here, yesterday. 50mm in the day, 40mm of which arrived over a period of just 20 minutes. My records go back a number of years.

that is an extraordinary amount, how did you measure it ?

it would be great to have watched something that intense

we had 19mm yesterday, rained most of the day, first proper rain we have had for ages
and the reason why - I have recently being laying a water pipe around our garden - see this post

finished it the day before (I will update that page) so presumably this rain fall was god saying 'why did you bother'

Very strange. We are not that far west of Harry and we only had a few spots.

that can be very much the nature of cloud bursts (convection rain) a few miles away and they may of never seen a drop

i would love to experience the monsoons in the Himalayan foothills, 48" in a day - wow that must be intense, average 50mm an hour for a day

in the 14 years i have kept such records our weekly max is 85.7mm - very boring

My usual weather station, which uses a 'tipping bucket' sensor, with a magnet, passing a reed switch.

The base having settled below the general ground level a little, my garage floor used to flood. I improved the drainage last year, but I fully expected it to be overcome with this downpour, but all still dry. Maybe helped by how dry and thirsty the garden was for water.

The public road, at the front, was completely flooded, the drains couldn't cope.

A quick dash to get the washing in before the latest downpour the weather tracker insisted was not on the way today. AI can't see a rain cloud coming. Just as well we began gathering apples earlier on:

I have a funnel draining into a pop bottle, empty it every sunday morning - probably as low tech as you can get

The house temperature is behaving rather oddly recently...

Last evening it was very slightly chilly, so I lit the living room fire on very low. In bed, overnight, just a summer quilt, it was too warm. It's 11.4C outside, at the moment, constant rain. There is no heating on at all, hasn't been since we got up, but the house is at 22C indoors. Yep I checked both gas, and electric consumption, and nothing much being used.

A nippy day despite bright sunshine; a perfect day to chill with a bunch o' cool catz:

easy listenin' for jammin' apples into warm jars. Six pounds up so far and i've only begun to pick 'em from the old tree.
