Hello, I have a quick question regarding my heating system. The cold water tank in the loft over flowed today and there is a hole in the overflow pipe. The ball cock appeared to be working correctly. Could the water have come out of the expansion pipe and filled the tank up? The bath was running at the time? Thank you. :)

Not really, unless the normal level of the water in the cistern is very close to the overflow.

Thank you. I had read that a hole in the coil could cause the water to rise through the expansion pipe. Is this in the smaller tank rather than the cold water tank?

Two cisterns, one small one for the central heating, one for cold storage for taps and hot water cylinder, usually.

A hole in the coil would cause the higher cistern to flow into the lower one. Which is the highest in the loft?

The bigger one is the highest. I think. There’s not much between them.

Ok thank you so the expansion pipe above the bigger cold water filling wouldn’t be the reason it’s over flowed? More likely the ball cock?
