Is it possible to melt gold in a coal fire in a fireplace? What precautions should be taken?

not really - google tells me it melts at 1065c - thats hot, open coal fire can't get mild steel much above Red which is about 850 / 900c
you would have to force air through the coals to get anywhere near 1100c

When I took early retirement from the Brinks-Mat warehouse at Heathrow, I bought a small electrically-heated crucible.

Your workshop will get very hot.

It is, just, possible to meet gold with a charcoal hearth and forced air.

You can work small amounts with a hydrogen/oxygen flame fed by the electrolysis of water.

You mean like this? What is being forced in? Is it just air? Why does it go down to 22k is it charcoal ash?
