So, if no back gutter installed, how is rain running down the slates and then hitting the back of the chimney stack being prevent from entering below slates and possibly through roof and chimney stack junction ?

I hope this question is understandable they way I've tried to explain it.

Ok. I have not had much look finding info regarding the leadwork protection to back of a chimney stack. As you said that it is not a welded back, I would appreciate if you would give me any links to info for alternative protections to welded lead.
