TBH, I thought it would be slanderous to call somebody racist if they clearly aren't.

But I've just Googled and apparently the courts have found it is a matter of opinion and therefore not slander. I'm surprised by that.

I might be wrong. The results may have been more about the US rules. I've now Googled specifically about the UK and the results seem more mixed as to whether it is defamatory.

I have just read that in October the Court of Appeal awarded Laurence Fox a retrial to fully examine his libel claim in response to being called a racist. A lot of the law might get clarified there.
