Last year a CFMM study found that GB News mentioned Muslims or Islam 17,000 times, accounting for almost 50% of all mentions on UK news channels (by contrast BBC and Sky accounted for 32% and 21% respectively.) According to CFMM, GB News presented Muslims and Islamic beliefs as part of a conspiracy to undermine the British way of life. As with The Spectator, GB News regularly ridiculed (and denied) the concept of Islamophobia. Recently the third leg of Paul Marshall’s media empire, the Unherd website, dedicated thousands of words to an article headlined “The Plot for a British Caliphate.”
It's interesting to note Paul Marshall began as a Lib-Dem, supporting them financially and actively campaigning on their behalf, belieiving them best placed to promote policies that would bring Britain back to a center ground where the Thatcher and Blair years would provide a platform for his Free Market ideals to flourish.
Then Brexit.
His disillusion with the Lib-Dems time in office in coalition with Cameron's Tories led to a more fervent swerve towards an extreme right wing viewpoint; aligning himself with Boris Johnson who also believed staying in the EU was a better idea than leaving - until it became politically expedient to think otherwise.
His idea of free speech is a noble stance to take in owning The Spectator as he believes the right to an opinion should be heard, regardless of content but he makes the mistake in allowing the kind of far right rhetoric to worm its way into mainstream politics, giving it a veneer of respectable opinion when broadcast in such an established magazine. ironically, the kind of Establishment mouthpiece politicians like Farage advocate against.

This rhetoric, amplified by editions such as The Spectator, are indirectly responsible and directly culpable for a rise in Anti-Muslim hate crime which rose in England and Wales by 19% in the 12 months to March 2025, according to Home Office figures. Last year, over a three-month period, Ahmed’s team documented 27 attacks against 25 mosques in 23 different parts of the country. In Scotland, Muslims were the target of nearly a third of religious hate crime.
A recent BMT survey found that more than half of Muslims (56%) had experienced religious prejudice in the past year. Muslim women appear to bear the brunt of the hostility, with reports of hijabs being ripped off, women being abused on public transport and others being harassed or filmed in public. Far-right groups have fused anti-immigration and anti-Muslim narratives, portraying Muslims as outsiders regardless of their citizenship. As Shabna Begum, the director of Runnymede Trust, warned in the months after the 2024 riots: “No one wants to be seen to defend Muslims.”
Allowing someone like Rod Liddle to endorse such rhetoric is just pouring fuel on the fire which, in turn...
...allows this kind of demonstration to take place at all.
Expressing concerns about the influence of radical Islam in the UK is an acceptable measure of our ability as a Democracy to tolerate the kind of free speech advocated by The Spectator in its finer moments - inciting the kind of hate speech against all Moslems flowing freely on our streets is not.

Unlikely. But it will be fun to see how much more popular he is than a man with a bin on his head.
