can i hire a machine to powerflush a system eg brandon tool hire. is it fairly straight forward to do.

Yes to both, but make sure you get the correct chemicals for your system and allow yourself about a day to do it.

Since most "professionals" dont seem to know what chemicals to use or how to do it properly then I would not say that its at all straightforward for anyone who has not received training.

95% of people who quote to powerflush a system do not touch, or in most cases know, how to clean the plate HE in the boiler.

Its really quite a sorry state of affairs when they are charging £300-£600 for the work!

as i understand it the powermax boiler i am taking out will first be disconnected before i flush the system. the plumber has a magnetic piece of equipment which attracts all the metal in the system as it flushes.

i am going to add a sludge remover to the system tomorrow and leave it in for the next few weeks until we come to flush and change to a new vaillant combi. we will also add more cleaner on the day. what do you reckon to this way of doing things?

nothing wrong in that as your powerflushing the system to install a new boiler.

so can't see what the the plate h / exchanger has got to do with what your doing.

any idea which product i should add? should it be a sludge remover or a basic cleaner. i think i will go for the sludge cleaner.

for old black sludge, Sentinel X400

you can leave it in for up to a month, it is mild, non-acidic and will not do any harm.

Go round vibrating the rads or bumping themn with a rubber mallert to shake free the sediment after the cleaner has been circulating for a few days.

I have heard it can be done using a rotostopped drill against a block of wood pressed against the rad.

If you can afford £100 or so extra for a Magnaclean you will be delighted to see how much black sediment it traps. You can leave it in place when you fit your new boiler as it will continue trapping sldge indefiniteley.
