Ceiling plaster cracked and falling away

Hi

About 6months ago I bought a victorian terraced house. The house had recently been refurbished and replastered throughout.

Over the last couple of months there have been a number of cracks appearing in the walls especially some horizontal cracks appearing about an inch below the ceiling/ wall joins in the bedrooms.

Also the ceiling plaster in the bedrooms has cracked a fair bit and has dipped in one place which has caused a patch of the plaster to fall off.

I am presuming most of the cracks are due to drying off but should this cause a peice of ceiling plaster to fall off? The quality of the ceilings don't look that good. You can see a couple of big squares that have appeared where the cracking has formed.

Is there anything major I ned to be concerned about? The ceilings are about 12' square. How much am I looking at to repair. I live in Romford, Essex if that helps give an idea on price.

go into the loft and have a look at the upper surface of the ceiling. See if it is plasterboard or lath and plaster.

the horizontal cracks below junction of wall and ceiling might be where there is a wooden wall plate, so the plaster is not onto brick. This is never satisfactory. The timber expands and contracts with the humidity so there will always be a crack. In this case, coving to cover the crack will hide it. Or possibly thick/textured wallpaper.

I know this was a long time ago, but I have the same problem with a crack in my ceiling that has now caused a part of it fall away, Im worried about the rest of the ceiling! Just wondered if you had to have your ceiling all taken down and replastered and if it cost a lot?
