Modern methods for tackling smoke damage

Hi there, I see there's plenty of advice about painting over interior smoke damage but most threads are years old. I'm dealing with the aftermath of a chip pan fire. The room has been professionally cleaned and the smell has gone but there's a lot of staining. The ceiling is white and the...

    Replace a cooker switch

I wouldn't want to damage it. The price of new chimneys has gone through the roof.

    Replace a cooker switch

So, I should take a cable from the under counter cooker connection and install a fused spur unit with a switch above the counter to control the extractor?

    Replace a cooker switch

Hi there, thanks for the advice but I've probably not been clear. I'm replacing a stand alone cooker with a new stand alone cooker. Can I just wire the extractor into the same under counter connection controlled by the same above counter switch?

    Replace a cooker switch

By that, I mean wire the extractor into the same connection as the cooker.

    Replace a cooker switch

Thanks for the speedy replies and excuse my ignorance but do you mean I can just wire the extractor hood into the under counter connection alongside the cooker?

    Replace a cooker switch

Hi there, thanks in advance for any advice. I'm swapping my old stand alone oven, hob, grill with a new stand alone oven, hob, grill and installing an extractor fan above. I have the usual above worktop cooker switch with the switched socket attached. Obviously, I'll wire in the cooker to the...

    Connecting to mains electricity costs

I've driven around the area to have a look at the poles and cables. Mostly there's a pole every 40m or so along the roads here, each pole serves 1 or 2 houses each, criss-crossing the road whenever it's needed. Sometimes the poles carry the broadband cable too. I'm guessing that if SSE are going...

    Connecting to mains electricity costs

This is a long shot but during my research I read about someone who had Power company hardware on land they owned and had never thought about wayleaves. During negotiations over their excessive quote they told the company that if they didn't reduce the quote considerably then they wanted the...

    Connecting to mains electricity costs

Hi there. I'm in the final stages of purchasing a building plot. I've sent off the online application to get my estimate from SSE regarding the cost of connection to the electricity grid and it can take 2 weeks. I can't wait that long thinking about the potentially horrific cost. Could anyone...

    Tilt and turn mechanism failure.

Hi there, after some rough treatment the tilt and turn mechanism on a kitchen window has buckled and now can only be tilted and then it has to be slammed shut. I've tried to bend it back with no luck and had a wee look online but can't find a similar type of mechanism. Any suggestions or...

    Too much hot water

@Madrab. Thanks for taking the time to give advice. I've decided to have the back boiler removed altogether. I imagine that to completely update the system and add a radiator or two would be pricey. I'll maybe start another thread for that. Over the 10yrs or so I've been bothered by the excess...

    Too much hot water

@oldbutnotdead. You're probably spot on. The guy was well liked in the area but I reckon this was probably because he was prepared to do the jobs quickly for cash and keep building standards out of it rather than the quality of his work.

    Too much hot water

@JohnD. Thanks, I do recognise all those warning signs. I am going to disconnect and remove the retrofitted back boiler. It looks like whoever installed the original electric immersion system did so properly, the cold tank is on a suitable base and it and the cylinder are above a hallway...
