Too much hot water

@oldbutnotdead. You're probably spot on. The guy was well liked in the area but I reckon this was probably because he was prepared to do the jobs quickly for cash and keep building standards out of it rather than the quality of his work.

By the way , check the immersion heater has an overheat cut-off. Older immersion heaters just relied on the thermostatic switch but later ones have to have an additional separate safety cut off. You can recognise it by the reset button in the connection area.

@73jonathan123 ..... you definitely need to have your system setup properly. Yes you'll need a heat leak/soak and yes you also need to have a safety release valve (temp/pressure) attached to your cylinder. The cylinder should really be indirect and the hot feed to the cylinder manually balanced/controlled between it and a suitable heat leak/soak.

Your cold water cistern (cwsc) is obviously well supported as it has alloy ribs and that will have been your saving grace up till now but it's is not designed to be heated regularly, especially to high temps, that is only there as a a safety feature and shouldn't be a normal feature of your system, which it currently seems to be. There is nothing wrong with a plastic cwsc and it can happily be used as part of the safety relief system, it just shouldn't be using it all the time.

I appreciate you may be on a budget and looking to do things as cheaply as possible but sometimes there are instances where specialist are needed to ensure you and yours safety, this is one of those cases. These systems cannot be DIY'd, they need experience and training to ensure the system is setup safely and trouble free.

@Madrab. Thanks for taking the time to give advice. I've decided to have the back boiler removed altogether. I imagine that to completely update the system and add a radiator or two would be pricey. I'll maybe start another thread for that. Over the 10yrs or so I've been bothered by the excess hot water and the vigorous activity between the boiler and the cylinder so it will be a relief. I have to say though that the water tank is a very robust piece of kit and doesn't look to have been affected in any way.
