    Fin drains

Since there doesn't seem much other info on the internet about using fin drain in a domestic setting, I thought I'd share some of my experience... I ended up with some Polypipe Linflex Type 6 fin drain. It comes rolled up with a sleeve at the bottom to insert a separate bit of perforated pipe -...

Setting posts for 5-bar gate - concrete, earth, rocks?

    Eeek, I wasn't planning on 6m of concrete! :/

    Removing patio

You'll definitely find people who will be willing to take away those slabs for free, or for a few quid each. Offer them on fb marketplace. If they're free they might even break them out for you too.

Setting posts for 5-bar gate - concrete, earth, rocks?

I haven't bought the gates yet but they'd just be bog standard 3m softwood gates. I guess ~50kg? Bernard, what are the brown areas in your drawing? I was planning on just having isolated holes for the posts. The ground does not drain well (though I'm hoping to improve that - see other recent...

Setting posts for 5-bar gate - concrete, earth, rocks?

Thanks. It's very compact, heavy, rocky subsoil.

Setting posts for 5-bar gate - concrete, earth, rocks?

Hi All, I'm planning on installing a double 5-bar gate, with 175mm square softwood posts, set around a metre deep (assuming I can dig that far!). I've seen mixed advice online about how to set them. The "default" approach seems to be to set them in concrete, but a significant minority of people...

    Fin drains

Just in case anyone else comes looking for the same thing, the organisations to contact are merchants for groundworks & engineerings products. Perhaps someone here knows how to refer to them, but I've not encountered them before. Anyway, they typically do not do online stock listing or ordering...

    Fin drains

Thanks both. I've tried builders merchants & farm supplies but no joy. SFK: I'm looking for a fin drain solution, not a french drain. The water will drain into an existing ditch. Adam

    Fin drains

Hi All, I have a site with a gentle slope across it & my house in the middle. When it's wet the water runs onto and across the site from neighbouring fields. The groundwater level is also often only just below the ground level. So I am looking to divert away the flow on the surface & in the...

    Hanging loftroll

Are you kidding? The batts advertised for timber frame are nearly 5 times more per m2 than the loftroll! For my garden room that works at £450 difference (& my labour is effectively free) Adam

    Hanging loftroll

That's a great idea about using some gaffer tape. I'll give that a try :) Adam

    Hanging loftroll

Hello, I'd like to use loftroll insulation vertically in a timber frame wall. I know it's not designed to keep it's shape in that orientation so am wondering about the best way to secure it. I'm thinking just stapling the top & maybe at the edges a bit (I can't do anything at the back and front...

"Cheap" shed roof - what am I missing?

But isn't there some more affordable option?! :( Adam

"Cheap" shed roof - what am I missing?

Huh, what distance between purlins for that? For the metal sheets I'd have the purlins at 1m centres, so anything closer than that & that adds cost again. (Even 11mm OSB is £36 at my local merchant - so still comes to near £300 & more than the steel even without the actual felt.)

"Cheap" shed roof - what am I missing?

Ha ha, oh yes, doh. I've corrected it.
