Replace the shower pump or the whole hot water system ...?

I would have been happy with one of the Salamander cheaper models. But they stipulate "HOT AND COLD SUPPLIES NOT MORE THAN 2 metres in 15mm" for the pipework supplying the pump. Unfortunately I have 1m on the hot side but nearly 3m on the cold side, all in 15mm.

Replace the shower pump or the whole hot water system ...?

My shower pump has suddenly stopped working. It will sometimes stutter into life if I give it a gentle tap, but I reckon it is now about 5 years old (was here when we moved into the house) so it's probably time to replace it. I noticed the pipework feeding it is only 15mm, and apparently...

    Valor Ultimate Turbochim intermittent starting

Thanks for the reply. Is the control box serviceable/repairable, or is the only option to replace it?

    Valor Ultimate Turbochim intermittent starting

I have a Valor Ultimate Turbochim. It is an open flame coal-effect gas fire. It has a built-in extraction fan system. Therefore you must switch on the extraction fan before it will let you switch on the gas. There are two switches to operate the fan, ie, an ON switch and an OFF switch...

Boiler gas valve replaced with a different model

Thanks for responding. Paul, What is a slow start main burn in layman's terms? I guess then that the v4600a was a fast start main burn? What's the difference? You say that you would fit the c on the proviso that main burner lights every time, but how will I know this? Should I just...

Boiler gas valve replaced with a different model

My boiler is a Thorn Olympic 38/50B. The gas valve failed and I had it replaced. I noticed that the valve he took out was a Honeywell V4600A-1023, and he replaced it with a V4600C-1029. Does anybody know what the difference is between these two models? Also, he relieved me of £98 + VAT...

    Thermocouple question

I tested the old and the new thermocouple, and under ideal conditions (I held them in the flame from the gas hob), they are both kicking out 25-30mV. So I thought maybe I'm not getting a good electrical connection with the electrical contacts at the gas valve. Trouble is, where the...

    Thermocouple question

Thanks for the comments. Boiler is a Thorn Olympic 38/50B. So chrishutt are you saying it shouldn't matter if the thin copper pipework of the thermocouple is fractured (it has a tiny break in it) ?

Boiler pilot will not light - help! Visitors coming soon!

Thanks for the response Agile. It seems I was wrong, I took off the cover of the boiler, and then it was obvious that there was gas coming out of the pilot jet. I discovered that the problem was that the spark was very weak due to it sparking at the spade connector as well as at its tip. I...

    Thermocouple question

I have a problem with my boiler because the pilot light will not stay alight. From what I've read on other posts, it could just be the thermocouple. So I went and bought a new universal one from B&Q for about £5, and fitted it. However it does not appear to have made any difference. I...

Boiler pilot will not light - help! Visitors coming soon!

Can anybody help with this problem? I have a Thorn Olympic 38/50B. Came home from work tonight, I know the boiler has been working because the water is hot, as normal (it comes on with the timer every evening). But when I put on the heating I noticed after 30 minutes that the radiators are...

    Knotty problem

Thanks for your replies big-all and Zampa. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet at some point and re-do the whole lot  . It's gonna be a big job taking all the woodwork in the house back to bare wood. Any tips on how to strip the paint off, would you recommend a heat gun, or chemical...

    Knotty problem

I moved house a short while ago. The previous owners seem to have recently painted all the internal woodwork (door frames and skirting boards). I guess they did this in the last 12 months or so. However I have recently noticed that they didn't seal the knots in the wood! Now I am getting...
