    Replacing Extractor fan

Thank you so much once again, I now have an operating fan that doesn't blow my RCD. If you inbox me your favourite charity, I'll see them right.

    Replacing Extractor fan

Thanks, too late in the evening to be doing safe electrics, will give that proper attention tomorrow evening.

    Replacing Extractor fan

Learned my lesson about disconnecting wiring, so unable to get a clear photo of back of the switch. Hope this sketch is acceptable. I have amended photos slightly too

    Replacing Extractor fan

The switch shown is the one on the opposite wall that controls power to the fan - well for the last 12 months, when I have flicked it, the fan becomes live. I understand your confusion over the colours but, switch on, fan on. For un-pixelated pic, see link. Now, about this tester I need to...

    Replacing Extractor fan

Obviously from comments above, I may have to accept this is beyond me and call an electrician. However, I will pop some photos on in an hour or so, just in case that makes it clearer. So far, on my neon screwdriver, I only have a 'reading' on the black mains lead. Equipment wise, I do not...

    Replacing Extractor fan

So far as how the fan was previously wired - embarrassed to say, no idea. The old one was removed pre-decorating and before the new one arrived. Thanks for comments re Part P. Thought for electrics in kitchens and bathrooms some works had to be carried out by qualified electricians - my bad...

You're right, BROWN, black grey and bare - 3 core & earth.

    Replacing Extractor fan

First question - is a straight replacement in a kitchen ok, or do I legally have to have a part P cert? Replacing a Silavent 150mm 6" Axial Fan Pull Cord SDF150PB with a Silavent SDF150HTB. The mains wiring is Brown, Black, Grey and plain earth. Black seems to be carrying the current and this...

    Damp Alcove

The 'fireplace' is open with a stove in it - plasterboard & tiles lining it.

    Damp Alcove

As part of a kitchen re-fit, an alcove has been covered in plasterboard, skimmed and painted. Now, there is black mould growing in patches on the chimney side of the alcove - I suspect the patches match up with the 'dabs' of bonding used to hold the plasterboard in place. There is no dpc on...

    Plasterboard in fireplace

A former fireplace has been opened up and raised to allow our gas cooker to live in it. The walls of the fireplace/chimney are being drylined and tiled, the extractor hood will vent up the chimney and so occupy most of the roof of the fireplace, but can anyone advise a material to protect the...

    Extending cable

From a DIY aspect, that sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately, no cupboards and too many connections - can't route them all through the same box due to the rules about where hidden cables can be.

    Extending cable

Having a lowered worktop for disabled access, so sockets need to be within reach :-)

    Extending cable

As part of a kitchen re-furb some of my sockets need lowering by 4" or so. The supply comes from the ceiling so my cables will now be 4" too short! I know I can't use stndard blocks behind plasterboard without buying special enclosures and having little access doors everywhere - not really...
