    mains circuit and rcd tripping

You're not alone with those hopes! :) I think, I've a natural distrust for things I don't understand and get rather anxious and frustrated about them. Couple this with the cowboys highlighted TV it doesn't really help. After folks posted here, I was half expecting a cable fault to be...

    mains circuit and rcd tripping

Oops missed the splitting circuit question. If you're asking about what went on with MCB 5, it apparently had the downstairs and upstairs wall socket circuits in there together. I didn't realise this at the time. He bought a new MCB to go into a spare slot and allocated the dowstairs to it...

    mains circuit and rcd tripping

sorry scousespark I don't know about the blacks. The reds are what stuck in my mind the most. I just remember studying those wondering why one MCB had one going into it, other had 4 and so on. To be honest, I dont actually recall seeing black. Guess I fail an observation test! Seriously...

    mains circuit and rcd tripping

I dont wish to give misleading or confusing information that may be out of time period from observing the work. I know at some point early on during the tests, all the red cables that fed top down into each of the MCB were pulled out and he was testing those one by one. The RCD test was...

new ceiling light with fan... 4 wires?

Now that you've got me thinking a bit more, I've had a look at the various bits of kit. The light attachment is separate from the fan motor body with three screws to join them together. However, the interesting part is the wire collection that links the light fitting to the fan fitting...

new ceiling light with fan... 4 wires?

There are two pull cords on the fitting. One to the side, operates the fan to 4 setting. Off, slow.. medium and fast rotations. The one on the underside, is for the lights to on or off state. I haven't attempted to fit it yet, until knew where things were going with confidence as other...

    mains circuit and rcd tripping

The only comments I can give you are: I had no appliances doing things for me in the background at either time. i.e. the kitchen kit were all idle waiting to be given work to do. Neither was sky+ springing to life with timed recordings or any such activity with other kit in the house...

new ceiling light with fan... 4 wires?

Hey guys, Do I feel silly. I have an electrician come around to help with a fault with RCD, and didn't give serious consideration to him stopping on and helping with a light fitting change. Some years back, I replaced a ceiling rose with a new light & fan combination. The ceiling...

    mains circuit and rcd tripping

Hi John The flip down door has a chart on it that I'd written on previously in pencil, back in '01 when bought the place. The notes made at the time were enough to highlight the circuits for lights upstairs and downstairs. At the time I marked 5 & 6 as "sockets". I must have figured then...

    mains circuit and rcd tripping

Ok - so i got real curious and did some quick tests. 8 - downstairs sockets. 7 - cooker 6 - shower 5 - upstairs sockets. From this, I can but deduce my former information was inaccurate. That is, the downstairs and upstairs mains sockets must have all been from 5.

    mains circuit and rcd tripping

Hi guys. He has been, and gone. The tests he carried out were all based from the consumer unit. The various circuits he said were "ok", and testing from there showed the cabling and the appliances plugged in were fine. He did mention the cooker, which was cabled into 7, was a low score of...

    mains circuit and rcd tripping

Thanks once again for the information. Taking folks advice, I've let my fingers do the walking, and phoned a company from yellow pages. The advert has logos for such "NIC EIC" and makes claims to have been in the business for 30 odd years. The guy is due to call around in the morning...

    mains circuit and rcd tripping

Hi Guys, I've had opportunity to take a picture of what I consider to be the "fuse box". One of these days I'll know the right term! This morning, all switches were in the up position bar no 5 and the RCD, which were both down. For completeness of info's that I can give. Switches 2...

    mains circuit and rcd tripping

Thanks for the feedback so far. I may not know the right terms of reference and so may get them wrong, sorry for that. Also not in a position to post a picture just now but will see about it later if necessary. To describe the "fuse box" it lives above the front door in the house. Drop...

    mains circuit and rcd tripping

Brief history, the house was built circa '99 and I've lived here since '01. There has been no electrical work ( such as changing sockets / light fittings ) for several years. Twice now, I've had the rcd and 1 circuit trip where I've lost power to the mains sockets downstairs in the house...
