    Galvanised Tank connected to Copper Pipe? Sounds like electrolysis... Could electrolytic corrosion not be a concern with that arrangement? What an interesting project.

    Ah yes OK, check if its spinning with that method. Perhaps don't TRY to stop it but if it does when you're checking to see if it's spinning while applying little pressure...that's got to be the problem.

    I don't think I would recommend stopping the pump with a screwdriver to be honest... But perhaps I've mis-interpreted that advice? If you don't set certain heat-up time periods for the hot water (&other heating zones really), it's only working off the cyl stat... ...I'm pretty sure that...

    They should be in the auto posn but when HW & CH selected they will be open with no resistance. Very basic process: Demand for HW or CH will open relevant valve, fire boiler which supplies heat to water in pipes which go through valve and supply demand with heat. Try pushing the lever...

    Any work done on water service recently? Not necessarily just at your house, down the road or something? If a water-board fella dropped a fag-butt in or an earthworm got shoved in the pipe & found its way to your service pipe perhaps there's a restriction/blockage? Try testing the pressure...
