    Fitting door in narrow hall

Thanks for your reply! I've now bought a premade kit. Out of the pack, the top is too wide for the hall, but it's made for two different door sizes and I can cut it down a little. This may be a bad idea, but to make some extra space I've removed the plaster from the brick wall on the left. The...

    Fitting door in narrow hall

Hi all, I'm looking to make my bathroom larger by moving the doorway into the hall and opening the bathroom into an existing cupboard and hallway. The challenge i have is that the part of the hallway where I would like to add the door is already very narrow/low (81cm/191cm) and is at a weird...

    Wood under iron guttering?

Thanks, all! It does seem a little difficult to source. Looking at it, the built up of different bits of timber suggestion makes sense. The old style timber moulds do look similar, but those I've found come in much smaller size than under the window. For a replacement, there are some pvc...

    Wood under iron guttering?

Hi all! The iron guttering on my bay window has rusted and the wood beneath it rotted. I'd like to clean up the gutter and replace the wood. A problem I'm having is that I can't find replacement wood. Partially as I don't know what to call it (it looks like architrave). I've attached a photo...

    Masonry Paint: What to use?

Hi all, I have quite an old sandstone and brick house (rendered in pebble dash with worn paint). There is evidence of penetrating damp and condensation on the inside. I'm looking to paint the outside with something water repellent and highly breathable. Emperor paints make some bold statements...

Overloaded Roof: To strengthen or replace?

There's a bit of asymmetry to the layout, and the ridge board isn't directly over a central spine wall. Not sure that this would be an option (nice if it were though!).

Overloaded Roof: To strengthen or replace?

I've not heard of these before, I'll take a look!

Overloaded Roof: To strengthen or replace?

Thanks, Sfk. I had not thought of the longer term implication of how people would view the strengthening work. Slate is definitely more attractive too! I wonder if reverting back does remove the defect? Or if there would be weakness that still needs addressing.

Overloaded Roof: To strengthen or replace?

A fair question! There were a few aspects of the service from the SE that I was not too happy with. I was looking for a space to sound out an idea before engaging a second engineer.

Overloaded Roof: To strengthen or replace?

Hi all, I have a small terrace from the 1800s. At some point the slate tiles have been replaced with concrete and there is evidence of deflection of the roof (apparently the purlins and ridgeboard have been overloaded). A suggested fix is to strengthen the roof (using steel work), which comes at...
