Advice please on bracing timber joists

Hi there. I am building a treehouse. It will be fixed to two joists that will sit either side of a tree. I plan to tighten the two joists toward each other, either side of the tree, but am unsure what bolts / fixings are best to use. The tree is at least 450mm / 18 inches wide, then each joist...

Replacing heating element on towel radiator

Hi John. Our house - its central heating with combi boiler. In our bathroom, we have a towel rad. That towel rad has been wired up to on-off switch and has its own heating element wired up. Its also connected to the CH. So yes, I think it is as you say. But a lot of towel rads have a...

Replacing heating element on towel radiator

EFLImpudence - thanks again. Sound logic. I haven't checked the valves yet, but not turning off the mains would be a better option, without a doubt. Yes, its a combo. Does that change things? Taylortwocities - cheers to you too. You've said similar to EFLImpudence, who talks a lot of logic...

Replacing heating element on towel radiator

Thanks EFLImpudence! Sorry, not sure what you by "turn off both of the radiator valves" - I think there is only one, does that sound right? Agree it can go into a container, just a bit worried about the whole system pouring everywhere if I leave the mains on? Cheers

Replacing heating element on towel radiator

Thanks Dum Spiro Spero. Interesting advice and very useful. Yes its water filled. I assume you suggest turning all valves off so the whole system doesn't empty when I bleed the rad? However, if the bathroom rad is upstairs, amd the mains water is turned off, they'd be no pressure coming...

Replacing heating element on towel radiator

Hi. I have a new(ish) towel rad and the heating element is gone (have checked and live wire is live, rad is receiving elec, and all wiring is correct, so it must be the element). So I need to replace the element. The element is at the bottom right of the rad, so vertical and the access...

Joining a roof to an outside roof

Hi. I am planning on building a bike shed outside at the end of my garage. The roof will join onto timber posts that will have side walling. The roof would probably be sheet metal or similar with felt, but it would be joined to a brick wall - can anyone advise on how I join the roof to the wall...

    Insulating single glazed windows

Hi. Anyone know how best to insulate a single glazed window? I don't mean the frame, more the air travelling through the single glass layer. Obviously secondary glazing is an option, but too expensive. The windows in question are not used / opened, so perhaps some kind of film, or thick plastic...

    Removing a stench pipe

HI. I have dug up a stench pipe at the road-end of my driveway. I don't know if it is still in use, but it sits in the middle-side of my drive and I want to get rid of it. Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so how - with an angle grinder then cap it off? Or do I have to keep it there...

Electrical - Replacing 6A fuse in Crabtree consumer unit

Hi there My light circuit has gone (also effects the damn power shower!). The fuse sparks and trips immediately everytime you try and switch it back on. Before calling a sparkie I want to try and replace the fuse myself, but am not sure how to get the specific 'tray' out of the entire unti...
