It was to make the garage weatherproof rather than waterproof as holes in the chipboard could let in cold air and I heat the garage when in working in there.
I've done the work now and also fully painted the parapets with a liquid rubber paint.
We had one of the UK's worst storms for a while...
Thanks I cleared the old bulging chipboard away and underneath it looks to be a felt, tar and gravel layer which is about 2 inches or so thick it then is laid on top of a steel mesh. There's only one section where there's a hole and this is under some weird tiled gable section at one end of the...
Yes it is a bodge but a bodge done out of necessity as I unfortunately don't have the money to pay for a second replacement roof.
I'm going to pull away the rotten chipboard when I get a chance and see what's going on. I'm pretty sure there must be another layer of something, as the roof is...
I'm not going to start again, as that would be a huge job, I'm not a roofer and I don't want to spend another £2000 + to fix it.
It's also waterproof now, so I was just going to patch it inside to make it a bit more protected from weather conditions.
My garage roof was leaking for a number of years after some cowboy builders stuck a rubber membrane down over the top of an existing chipboard roof, then fitted a plasterboard false ceiling.
I've now stopped the garage leaking (covered in another thread) but I've had to pull off the...
As an update, I put flash band around all of the garage where the rubber membrane had been tacked onto the boxing. I then used a rubber liquid paint and went over the parapets and the flash band. I was only able to do one coat before a storm hit.
During that time there was torrential downpour...
As an update I got onto the roof yesterday as the ice had finally started to break up. I decided to check the work done. I got a screw driver and pushed it down the back of the boxing and there was no resistance and the screw driver came out the bottom. So nothing has been chased into the wall...
Thanks. I'm going to first paint the area with a bitumen primer and then put the lead flashing all around over where the roofers attached the membrane to the wall then and seal it with lead mate. Then I'll paint over the whole of the parapet with a waterproofing sealant.
I was contemplating...
I've actually got some flashing trim when the weather gets a bit warmer and there's not a sheet of ice on the roof, I'll give these suggestions a go. Thanks for the help!
Hi
Yes I agree.
Its a bit of plastic boxing that the membrane goes into and then it's screwed to the wall. I've attached some photos of it, including corner sections which are wrinkled.
I've also put a couple of photos of the exterior and interior of the garage as someone was saying they...
Hi
The water ingress is along all the edges of the roof and seems to be directly below the rubber membrane section that buttes up against the parapet walls. The worst section was the bit that's painted. But it's also now really bad along the far end (not the section with the silly tiled pitched...
My garage has been leaking for a number of years after some roofers put on a rubber membrane layer on the existing chip board and then refused to rectify the problem when it was pointed out it was leaking and walked off the job.
I've only now discovered where its leaking from, which appears to...
