Insulating a painted/plastered wooden wall onto a cold loft - VCL needed?

Yup - that's the idea (chicken wire on the outside only). The idea being it'd help retain the wool in its upright positioning without compressing it / it'd be possible to infill/top up the "cage" (i.e. the part between the wall and the chicken wire) with wool. I guess wood fibre might also be...

Insulating a painted/plastered wooden wall onto a cold loft - VCL needed?

Thanks Robin. I have a bunch of spare chickenwire type stuff I could use to create cages (probably and inner and and outer) to hold the mineral wool. That seems quite quick and easy to me, comapared to PIR. My concerns with PIR are: - Material cost - it works out more for 150mm PIR than 300mm...

Loft insulation advice - unusual construction

Thanks. I'm hoping we can take off some of the Decra and bend it back into shape; re-roofing is, I suspect, outside of the budget! I suspect I'll take the plunge on "fluff", be it mineral wool, or sheep wool, or something else. I spoke to an architect who recommended Wood Fibre Boards (and...

Insulating a painted/plastered wooden wall onto a cold loft - VCL needed?

Thanks - that's an appealing solution. Tempted to use mineral wool instead of PIR as it'd be easier to install and cheaper (space isn't an issue), if that's still ok. Or would it be advantageous to use PIR - e.g. because of the foil, and because it's hard to imagine much water getting into, or...

    Large skylight repair - flashbanding?

Still working my way through this one. I'm struggling to find anyone willing to take this on, so to the extent anyone's able to either recommend someone or provide some Noddy level steers (so I can DIY), that'd be hugely appreciated. There is an upstand underneath, which the polycarbonate...

Insulating a painted/plastered wooden wall onto a cold loft - VCL needed?

’m looking to insulate a vertical wall onto a cold roof in London. The wall, from inside to out, is paint / presumably plaster / sheet timber (unsure whether OSB / plywood / something else) and a few supporting battens / cold roof. I guess the key question is whether a VCL is needed on the warm...

Loft insulation advice - unusual construction

Hi I'm keen to insulate a loft with unusual construction (see below). I'm hoping that can be the usual "roll out some mineral wool" to a depth of 300mm (and raise any boarding above that by at least 50mm). But am weary of condensation risks (all the more so as this is a timber frame, timber clad...

Loft insulation - cold vs warm, material recommendations, etc

Thanks - good to know on the dew point/PIR front. Would definitely be an easier (and cheaper) job without the VCL. Guilty as charged on the long roof lights. The EDPM estimate was a ball park from a roofer, including PIR insulation underneath, for about 350m2 of a series of roofs (see below)...

Loft insulation - cold vs warm, material recommendations, etc

Thanks for the replies! Plywood/VCL/skylight The plywood (or similar) is around the skylight (see below). So on the other side of the verticals here is living space. There's basically no effective insulation, but also no current VCL. I gather a VCL is normally needed on the warm side to help...

Loft insulation - cold vs warm, material recommendations, etc

Hi I’m hoping to improve the loft insulation of a cold roof of a large (c. 350m2) wood clad, timber frame bungalow that is currently poorly insulated and struggles with heat retention. It is currently largely single glazed (I’m working on secondary glazing with Magnetglaze Extreme Pro and 4-6mm...

Insulating loft which you later plan to convert

Hi, I have a c. 9x8m loft in a 1860 ish Victorian house which I'd like to insulate now*. As you can see from the below, it's barely insulated, but is currently "cold roof" construction. 1) It's possible I may ultimately end up doing a loft conversion (in maybe 5+ years). It'd be preferable...

Cold roof insulation - general tips and materials recommendations?

Hi I’m hoping to improve the loft insulation of a cold roof of a large wood clad, timber frame bungalow that is currently poorly insulated and struggles with heat retention. It is currently largely single glazed (I’m working on secondary glazing with Magnetglaze Extreme Pro and 4-6mm Perspex)...

    Large skylight repair - flashbanding?

Thanks. I assume I'd need to get some more Decra Classic to do this (probably useful to have some spares in any case).

    Large skylight repair - flashbanding?

More like 1/10th of that I think, but when you add in PIR insulation, membrane, any other materials, labour, scaffolding/tin hats, and a profit margin, I assume that explains the figure. If it's way off base (which I'd hope it is - would make it more viable), that'd be great. I've only had one...

    Large skylight repair - flashbanding?

Many thanks. Seems like a sensible and practical solution, given the circumstances. FWIW, the other side of other sky light, which has been flashed (I'm unsure when - I think it was originally installed c. 2006/2007) looks like this. I really should take some better photos ... and remove the...
