Thanks Hugh ,yes it's a removable 6" sq iron gully grid, I'll take your advice and get plastic and extend through circle bit in grid. Looks a bit untidier than going into soil pipe though.

Was thinking of a replacing DIY alarm using Texecom Veritas Kit etc. for another DIY install. Had a look at their Installation guide and they have power wires as green and white. Reading comments here i thought they had an easy install reputation. Isn't red and black +ve and -ve by convention...

Thanks for advice GG will definitely get their fixed fee rather than pay for board plus labour. Heard the APS ticking/clicking just before fault occurs so may try getting APS changed first as that is not megabucks i hope.
