I think that removing the link has sorted it and it was that simple. It's rather annoying that we had no fewer than 5 Vaillant engineers out last year and not one of them removed it.

I don't have a Vaillant cylinder. It's an old copper one with an ACL HTS2 stat.

Thanks dilalio I think that has sorted the problem. I've fixed the exposed conductors too - the wires for the boiler and cylinder were loose for testing when I took the photo.

Yes it could well be due to the tap. Though it isn't a tap from Ikea, as far as I know. It could be, it's one that we were given, and have had stored for a while and just used now.
