    Socket Heights

This is fine and I don't think anyone has a problem with this, but do these rules regarding the installation heights of socket / light switches etc apply to: - new wiring to new builds (extensions or complete house) or - re-wires of old buildings or - part re-wires of old buildings or...

    Socket Heights

I'm pleased it isn't just me that doesn't fully interpret the situation as per another installer. Building regs M1 section 8 (p.69) do state that "the aim is to assist those whose reach is limited", and that "Switches and cocket outlets for lighting and other equipment should be located so...

    Socket Heights

I know they are not within the zone as specified in building regs M1 section 8.3, but who is correct? I suspect we are both correct, but I could easily be wrong! Good link by the way, thanks for that! :-)

    Socket Heights

I am a DIYer and in the process of completely rewiring a bungalow. The new sockets are below the housing regulations requirements for accesibility for disabled users, but are acceptable as I see it, as they are about 14" from the floor and that will prevent any damage to the plugs / flex etc...

    Drilling Through Joists

Thanks pain, I mean Albert, The cable is on the ring main and I don't think I'll worry about any volt drop there. :)

    Drilling Through Joists

Can do. I think I had ££££ in my head and now I think about it, I will only really be adding about 3m on to route in total. So the addition will cost an extra £4 ish compared to drilling wrong and costing me £xxxxx by Mr Part P bloke to put it right!

    Drilling Through Joists

I need to get across to a drop down point near the middle of the loft space. The loft will eventually be boarded to improve storage etc, so unable to go direct to the drop down point. Any alternatives?

    Drilling Through Joists

That's what I've read Albert. It was just that I was going to drill through a joist or three to get across to a drop down point to a socket below, then thought I'd best re-measure and check. I'm not up for drilling loads of holes etc. Looks like I'll be ok - just need to drill in a different...

    Drilling Through Joists

Running cables through the house loft now and before I go wild with the drill on the joists I thought I'd just check with you lot what I have read and summise is correct. 25% - 40% from either end of a joist is the zone that is mandatory to drill through. Is this correct? Length from...

    Meter Tail Max Length?

I'll be installing them - as a DIYer who is comfortable with electrics, well I play with them on the signalling side of the railway anyway. I have a retired electrical engineer as a reference point but he is away at present. The main reason I asked was that screwfix.co.uk sell them in 5m...

    Meter Tail Max Length?

I'll be installing 25mm meter tails but was wondering if there was a max length. Pete

    3 Amp FCU 4 a cooker hood

So it is not necessary to install a separate FSU for the hood? Is a viable / allowable solution to put a switched socket (on the ring main) located in the hood out of sight, then fix a normal plug to the hood flex and fuse to 6A? Pete
