  • Hi, I had several people look at our loft. They all said that it was nothing serious, i.e. not any form of rot. The most plausible explanation (there were several) was hygroscopic salts, which would be indicative of the beams having got fairly wet at some stage and now being in the process of drying out. That's at least consistent with what I heard from the previous owners, who told me that the builders who did the roof extension managed to let quite a lot of rain in at some stage.

The advice was to monitor the situation, and see if there was any concrete evidence of condensation in the cold months when the heating was on full blast. Whenever I've been up there the beams have felt pretty dry, so I've decided it's nothing to worry about.
