    another option could be to hack out both sides of crack and eml (expanding metal) the bridge between board and brickwork. only way to know is to beak out around weakness to see if tied in enough

    plasterer by trade. good advice above. add a mesh and waterproofer to your scratch coat to prevent cracks reoccuring due to brickwork. there are insulating methods you could consider also using modern renders but a bit more costly

    tiles or numerous other materials would make a good splashback. glass, stainless steel. fit sink first then splashback.
