    I know this isn't answering your main point, but drilling from the inside will cause a mess if your wall is roughcasted, if so drill from outside for a neater job but inspect the other side of where your going to drill. Hitting a cable would not be good!

    Cheers breezer, its a question in a project at college, in my limited experience we have only used conduit (PVC) for protecting cable in raggled solid walls, and running stair lighting systems in bloocks of flats but nonetheless I still have to make an attempt at answering the question!
