Implications of heavy boiler corrosion for pipework?

Just to update on this, we finally got a new boiler installed last week by a local company. The engineer said the casing was "rotten" - I think he was quite surprised at how bad it was - and wondered if it had been running at unusually high temperatures or something. The real damage was at the...

    Urgent boiler replacement

Yes, I think we're probably inclining towards a straight swap at the moment. I looked into electric boilers and did one manufacturer's "can we fit one" test, which said no, they couldn't, as we didn't have the necessary space. Plus they are far more expensive - and if the immersion heater is...

    Mixer tap temperature fluctuates

I'm not sure whether you're in a house or a flat? We had a shared mains supply with the downstairs neighbours, and if they flushed the loo our (electric) shower would run cold immediately.

How do I access shower valve?

You can try, but it didn't work when I tried it in a similar situation recently. The plumber using grips did work.

Implications of heavy boiler corrosion for pipework?

The fault was that the pilot light had gone out and that the reset button wasn't working, so we - including the engineer - initially thought it might just be a spare part that was needed, until he dismantled the thing. Believe me, the corrosion is so bad in places that what's left is probably...

Implications of heavy boiler corrosion for pipework?

Trouble is, we have a vulnerable adult in the property. Most local companies can't commit to urgent call-out if we lose heating in the same way BG can.

Implications of heavy boiler corrosion for pipework?

Hello. Having mentioned in another thread that our condensing boiler (Potterton Gold) has just been condemned, it's got me wondering. We moved in last summer and got the boiler checked (and I thought, serviced, although we've since been issued a service reminder) then under a British Gas...

    Urgent boiler replacement

Thank you both for your feedback. Can't be rushed into anything - we finally have an electrician booked in for the next couple of weeks, so this will have to wait until after! We only moved in last summer, so haven't tried the immersion heater yet. I hope it still works okay, although at the...

    Urgent boiler replacement

Discovered, on getting an engineer in to fix what I'd thought was probably a minor fault preventing the boiler from working, that it has had to be condemned (and yes, justifiably - you should see the insides! Ye gods ...). The house (probably 1000-odd sq. ft.) is a fairly typical 3-bed layout...

Re-jigging part of bathroom - considerations

In view of the problems we've already had with the bathroom in the house we moved into last year, we're considering a partial re-jigging of the bathroom - refitting the bath and shower. The house is a fairly typical 3-bed layout upstairs: two large bedrooms along the party wall; a smaller...

    Growly motor noise under bath

A picture of the situation behind the bath, in case anyone's interested: You can see the functioning bath support strut at rear left - I believe the one which has collapsed is attached to that block of wood at bottom right. As you can see, the piping is very close to the shell of the bath.

    Growly motor noise under bath

Hmm, and now someone else has reported that it occurs when you put your feet down - at the plug/tap/shower end of the bath, well away from the pump. So it doesn't seem likely that the collapsed support leg/pressure being put on the pump is the cause. Unless a leg has collapsed at the other end...

    Growly motor noise under bath

Even took the professional 15 minutes or so to get into it - and he knew where to look and what to do! He reckons the pump is on its way out - and is obviously an old one - but pointed out that the bath support leg on the other side from where the pump is has collapsed and that therefore the...

    Growly motor noise under bath

As you can see from my message No. 5, I can't see where to get in to have a look. Obviously the installation was done so well that I can't find the joins. Thanks, but no, it's definitely not that. Also, and I don't know whether it's related, but I tried turning the water on this morning to...

    Growly motor noise under bath

Can't edit my original post now, but wanted to correct the above.
